Laser light therapy (LLLT) is a proven effective treatment for androgenic (female and male pattern) hair loss, and Dr. Epstein has been offering it to his patients since 2005. Studies, as well as the experience with our patients, show that LLLT slows down or stops altogether the gradual progression of hair loss in the majority of men and women, and can restore density due to the thickening of finer, miniaturized (vellus) hairs.
LLLT is administered at home with several recommended devices – the LaserCap and the Capillus. These devices provide the critical coherent beams as a direct source of laser light ensuring the maximum laser energy contact with the scalp – much stronger than can be achieved with hand-held lasers. Flexible and shaped like a dome, these devices fit discreetly under a baseball cap and are portable with a rechargeable battery. The typical treatment schedule is three times a week for 30 minutes, for the first six months, which can then be reduced to two or even one times a week – however, this schedule can be modulated by the doctor. The process is painless, relatively effortless, and most importantly fully safe without any side effects.
LLLT helps patients in the following ways:
- To help slow down and stop active shedding in men and women
- To speed up the healing after a hair transplant
- To help thicken existing hair, providing patients with a fuller appearance of hair density in men and women
LLLT works by two different mechanisms. First, it increases blood flow to the scalp, and second, it directly stimulates the mitochondria (energy centers) of the hair follicles, increasing cellular activity and strengthening hair growth. The result is a stabilization and an actual potential reversal of the hair loss process, helping turn miniaturized hairs into stronger “terminal” hairs.
These therapies are best provided through a physician like Dr. Epstein experienced in not only laser light therapy but in all hair loss therapies, who can not only properly evaluate the patient, oversee the treatment and make recommendations, but also follow patients to determine the efficacy of the treatment and to recommend other potential treatments. Used privately in the comfort of home, these laser devices are completely painless and safe. Recommended use is three times a week for 30 minutes, then after 6 to 12 months, down to twice a week.
While it does not work for all individuals, LLLT is definitely effective in 60-70% of patients.
SUMMARY OF DEVICES:
- Laser Cap – this is the original device, designed by a colleague of Dr. Epstein, Dr. Robert Haber. The device contains over 300 individual diodes, and is only sold through physicians’ offices. LaserCap comes with a lifetime warrantee, with a one-year warrantee on the battery, and overall the company provides excellent customer service.
- Capillus – a less expensive but effective device that contains around 225 individual diodes.
How LLLT is offered by the Foundation for Hair Restoration
Patients have two options- at home devices and in office
In terms of convenience, nothing can beat the use of one of these at-home devices which provide the same dose of laser light energy as the in-office device. These two devices carried by us which we recommend are the LaserCap® and the Capillus®.
Here at the Foundation, we have the Revage 670, which utilizes the same technology and similar laser light energy as the LaserCap and Capillus. All hair transplant patients are provided at no charge one month of in-office LLLT therapy in the Miami office after a hair transplant procedure. In addition, some patients choose to utilize the in-office device rather than purchasing an at-home unit if they live close to the office and can come by twice to three times a week.

Hey Ed, All is well here. I have been in for a few laser treatments so far (including today). Cindy took a look at my donor site, and told me everything looks good. Dr Epstein was great as expected. His demeanor and expertise is what I was looking for, and I am very happy I chose him. Thanks for touching base.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is LLLT safe?
These devices meet or exceed all federal safety and manufacturing standards. As a Class 3R laser, the LaserCap is considered safe when used as directed. Laser therapy is a 100% painless treatment that has absolutely no side-effects.
How does Laser Therapy work?
Laser therapy is the use of visible wavelengths of light (e.g. ‘red’) which have a biological effect on cells. It is known that wavelengths of light produced by the diodes of the LaserCap are associated with an increase of energy production within the cells and which may be the primary mechanism for helping patients’ hair follicles produce thicker, healthier looking hair.
Can I use LaserCap in conjunction with Propecia, minoxidil or other treatments?
Laser Therapy can be used as a stand-alone treatment regimen or in conjunction with FDA-approved medications. LLLT Therapy has also been shown to accelerate healing and decrease discomfort after surgery. The application of minoxidil (Rogaine) just prior to the use of the laser seems to enhance the absorption and therefore the results of minoxidil, so Dr. Epstein recommends this to motivated patients.
What is included with a LaserCap?
The LaserCap includes the rechargeable battery pack, A/C power adapter for charging, the patented laser therapy device containing 325 ‘pure’ laser diodes (no LEDs) 650nm/5mW each. Sturdy airport-compliant carrying case included. International power adapters are available, rechargeable battery pack.
Where can I get a laser?
LaserCap and Capillus devices can be purchased through the office of Dr. Epstein, either by calling 305-666-1774 or 212-759-3484 or by email info @fhrps.com.
It should be noted that simultaneous with laser therapy, patients are encouraged to follow medical and nutritional guidelines for enhancing hair growth. These recommendations can be provided by our office. In addition, along with the treatment course, it may be determined that other therapies and possibly hair transplantation is indicated, in light of the patient’s goals and response to the treatment.
Real Patient Testimonial
Thanks for getting back to me. I realized after I emailed you that your area is the laser treatment. My fault.
I think it’s going well. I’ve been using the cap three times a week since September. My family has noticed a difference the few times I’ve seen them since I started. I’ll reach out to the office to schedule an appointment. Hope to catch up with you in a few months.
Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you sooner. We’ve been away from home. Things seem to be going well. I think the hair loss has slowed down and perhaps even a bit of thickening of what I do have. I most certainly will continue with the laser cap and hope for continued success. Thank you for checking in on me and for all your help. I really appreciate it!
I am a 75 year old Caucasian woman with great, thick, naturally curly hair which I color & have blown dry twice a week. My hair is “my thing”. About 6 to 9 months ago, I noticed a slight bald spot in the part of my hair & in the front right & left of my forehead. Most distressing. I sent away for & used every product out there, to no avail. I also stopped coloring my hair for 3 months & that didn’t help. Finally I went to see a plastic surgeon Dr. Epstein who had done hair transplantation on his brother (who is my dentist) & who had taught transplantation to his other brother who is a doctor. This doctor told me there were 3 things one can do BEFORE going thru transplantation.
- They take your blood, spin it & inject it back in your scalp to encourage growth.
- Rogaine. I had worked for Kevis, an Italian product & I know you can never stop taking it & I didn’t Want the side effects
- Red light laser in a cap form.
Ananth who works with Dr. Epstein told me how to use it: Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 20 minutes. I have been using the Laser cap for 5 weeks & I saw immediate results. My bald spot is GONE & where my hair was receding I have baby hair. So the hair loss has filled in & stopped I am thrilled. Worth every penny. No drugs, no surgery.
I came to see Dr. Epstein in Feb 2011, he provided me with a thorough analysis of my hair restoration options and benefits. I decided to start on six months of laser light therapy. I visited the office twice a week for treatments of 30 mins in length. The office staff were very accommodating and flexible with my schedule. The process and therapy went well throughout the program, patience is important with the program. Towards the end of the six months the therapy yielded good results, I saw my hair become thicker and losing hair was dramatically decreased. I would recommend the laser light therapy program for individuals who are looking at hair restoration options. – Raul
The laser cap itself is unreal. It has only been two months and I am already seeing great results. It is worth every penny. Please thank Dr. Epstein for his advice. I should have taken it two years ago. Thank you again for taking the time to ask for an update.
All the best.

Jason, USING THE LASERCAP
Dear Dr. Epstein- I want to tell you how great my results have been since I started using the LaserCap just 6 weeks ago. Within 3 weeks, my rapid shedding- that was freaking me out, you remember- slowed down, thanks to you. I took your advice on other things I could be doing, but clearly the laser is what is helping most. My family has already noticed that my hair looks better- and I definitely look a lot happier. Thank you again and again.
Mariana USING THE LASER CAP
How are you today, hopefully you are doing great!
I love the Laser cap, I know I just started using it however, I can tell it is working, there already are some very short stubs about 1/2 millimeter long. You have to shine a bright flash light on them at an angle to see…in some spots, and in other spots there are easily visible as they are longer, about 1.5 millimeters or even 2 millimeters long. I am sure they are not “basic skin surface hairs” They are scalp hairs… So it is already working. (I am not sure if I am shedding any…I can not tell.)
I am probably best to use the laser cap only since it is low risk and will probably give me the results I want.
Take you time I know you are busy..and thank you.
Hope all is well. Sorry for my delayed response.
Ive been using the LaserCap along with Pura d’or shampoo.
My rate of hair loss has surely subsided from what it was. Im not sure if there is thickening or filling in of the bald spot, but I definitely do notice much less hair fall, which is great.
Can I now consider the hair transplant? Do you have a scientific method to determine if Im ready for one? I do plan to travel to Miami on the week of the 6th, and can visit the clinic if that helps.
