Unique Biotechnology Hair Solution
AS A CLINICAL PARTNER, DR. EPSTEIN IS WORKING WITH HAIRCLONE® TO BRING HAIR REJUVENATION AND REGENERATION INTO ROUTINE CLINICAL PRACTICE AND MAKE HAIR LOSS A THING OF THE PAST.
Hair Rejuvenation with HairClone®
Typically when hair loss occurs hair transplantation is the preferred method for restoring fullness.
As an alternative or an adjuvant therapy, by storing your own hair follicles in the HairClone® bank, cells from these follicles can be multiplied then injected into your thinning scalp, helping to rejuvenate the existing hairs and provide a fuller appearance of hair. This technology is the first of its kind and can be thought of as an “insurance policy” for anyone concerned about future hair loss.
What is HairClone®?
HairClone® is the world’s leading hair follicle bank that is working to make hair multiplication a reality. Individuals who are worried about future hair loss will soon be able to undergo a process in which Dr. Epstein extracts a small number of healthy hair follicle cells that are then cryopreserved for storage in the HairClone’s UK lab. Then, in the future, at a time when the individual experiences more hair loss, certain of the follicle cells can be multiplied then injected back into the scalp to rejuvenate the dying hairs. Think of HairClone® as an insurance policy for hair loss!
Dr. Epstein is proud to be the exclusive HairClone® Associate for south Florida. As the technology is closer to becoming a reality, our offices will be able to provide you with more information and to discuss the potential benefits of HairClone® with you.
If you are interested in being kept updated on this technology, please email us [email protected] and you will be notified once this treatment is ready for applicability here in the US.
The Hairclone® Concept?
Approximately 50 hair follicular units (or grafts) would be taken by a hair transplant surgeon under local anesthetic. This would be about a 30-minute procedure and would require the surgeon to take out the follicular units using a tiny punch extractor. The patient’s own hair should comfortably hide the harvest sites and he/she can go back to normal life almost immediately and there would be no long-lasting scars. Initially, these follicular units would be cryopreserved and banked until needed.
When required, some of the follicular units would be taken from the bank and processed to isolate the specific cells involved in the production of the hair shaft itself. These cells would be grown in culture in MHRA licensed laboratories and they would divide and multiply rapidly over two to four weeks.
These expanded cells would then be transported back to the clinic and micro-injected into the patient’s scalp were needed where they would be expected to migrate to miniaturizing follicles and rebuild the thinning vellus hairs causing them to produce thicker terminal hair shafts and regain a more youthful appearance. In a later version of the product injected cells would be able to create brand new hair follicles by a process called follicle neogenesis.
Over 40 years of research
The Research Is Needed To Make Hair Multiplication A Reality
There are over 40 years of basic research already to support this concept and the HairClone® team has extensive experience in this area. Although more scientific and clinical research is still needed before this concept can be fully developed, we believe that this could be a reality in 2-3 years as many of the steps needed are already known such as:
- Method to remove the follicular units
- Method to cryopreserve hair follicles
- Method to cryobank cells for many years
- Method to micro-dissect out the required cells from the hair follicle
- Method to micro-inject follicle cells back into the scalp
- Monitoring systems to measure hair shaft thickness and hair density
The main questions that research needs to determine are:
- The best markers to use to measure hair follicle inductivity
- The optimum system to expand cells in culture in order to maintain inductivity
- The mechanisms by which re-implanted cells rejuvenate and regenerate hair follicles
