There are hair transplant surgeons all over the world, but not every surgeon has the same expertise or training. There are blog and news articles all over the Internet detailing hair transplants that went wrong and required a lot of time and money to fix. In fact, one British man admitted to paying more than $54,000 trying to get his hair surgeon to repair a hair transplant of poor quality and now wishes he’d “cut his losses” and found the best hair surgeon to handle his hair transplant.
While it may seem best to find a hair surgeon in your area, the truth is that some cities or even entire areas of the country simply do not have hair transplant doctors with a lot of expertise. It’s worthwhile to pay extra to find a qualified doctor, even if it means traveling out of state. Here are two reasons why you often benefit from traveling for the best doctor you can find.
Partner Your Hair Transplant with a Vacation
After a day-long hair transplant, you really do not need much in the way of a recovery period, usually just a day or two. If you stay in town for a week, you can relax and enjoy a vacation and then return for a follow-up appointment with your surgeon before you return home. While it is true that most surgeons will help you to find a local doctor for follow-up care, you do not suddenly have to switch doctors if you time your hair surgery with a vacation.
Hair Restoration Surgeons with Advanced Training Are Easier to Find if You Travel
There is no American Board of Medical Specialties board specific to hair restoration. Theoretically, any licensed doctor can perform hair transplants. However, there are two organizations you should check to see if your surgeon is a diplomate prior to scheduling a consultation.
The first is some board certification in a recognized board that has some clinical applicability to hair transplantation and aesthetic surgery. These include such specialties as facial plastic surgery, general plastic surgery, and dermatology.
The second is certification by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, which requires the doctor to have knowledge in the field of hair restoration, along with having done a certain amount of cases. Doctors must pass a test before certification is granted. In 2013, the exam was held in Houston, Texas, and another is scheduled in Bangkok, Thailand in 2014. Not every surgeon is willing to travel to take this exam, so again you should check.
