An eyebrow hair transplant is a surgical procedure which transfers a patient's own hairs from a donor area to the eyebrows in order to restore hair growth to eyebrows that are thin, scarred or missing. Hair loss in eyebrows can result from a number of reasons including overplucking, previous electrolysis or laser hair removal, genetics, thyroid or other hormonal abnormalities, or trauma resulting from surgery, injury or burns.
The donor area is often the back or sides of the scalp. This hair is genetically programmed to be permanent and, once transplanted to the eyebrows, will grow for a lifetime. In fact, after the eyebrow hair transplant, the new hairs will need to be trimmed regularly, typically once a month.
During the eyebrow hair transplant procedure, hairs are transplanted one and occasionally two at a time, mimicking the way that eyebrow hair grows naturally. Anywhere from 50 to 325 hairs may be transplanted in a single procedure.
