Hair Transplant Surgery Procedure Step-by-Step

Hair Replacement Surgery Procedure, Step-by-Step

Making The Decision.

Anyone considering a hair transplant will have a number of questions related to the procedure. We have tried to answer many of them in our brochures and on this website, but at the time of your consultation with Dr. Epstein or any of the other Foundation For Hair Restoration surgeons, the doctor will answer any additional questions you might have and explain in detail what is involved. The consultation will also provide you an opportunity to discuss your goals.

Seeing Is Believing.

Part of the purpose of the initial consultation is to show you examples of the work of Dr. Epstein and the other Foundation For Hair Restoration doctors.  You'll learn how the Foundation doctors individualize the treatment plan for each patient, and see how natural the results can be with follicular unit grafting. In addition to viewing before-and-after pictures, you may choose to meet with some of the Foundation's patients to get a better understanding of what can be achieved through this procedure.

The Day Arrives.

On the day of the procedure, you'll arrive at the office and made to feel comfortable with a neck massage and, if you choose, a pill for relaxation. The procedure is performed virtually painlessly through the use of The Wand®, a computer guided anesthetic device. The rare patient will choose to have intravenous sedation for the procedure. The doctor first removes the donor strip, after which he closes the incision in a plastic surgery fashion. The individual grafts are then dissected out under the microscope, while the incisions are made in the scalp to accept the micrografts. As these recipient sites determine the pattern and direction of hair growth, this critical step is performed exclusively by the surgeon.

The grafts are then placed into the specified sites. In a typical procedure, as many as 4,000 or more grafts, each containing one to three hairs, are transplanted. Three to six hours later, you can go home free of any bandages. The next day, you return to the office for a hair washing, after which you may return to work and most activities. People who travel from out-of-town for surgery are able to fly home the next day. Sutures in the donor area are dissolvable so there is no need to return to the office for suture removal.

Regrowing Hair.

Generally the new hairs start growing in at around 12 weeks, and will continue to grow for a lifetime. These hairs are permanent, and need to be cut and cared for just like the rest of your hair. Some patients elect to have an additional procedure to add to the density or to cover other areas of the scalp, which can be done as soon as four months later.

More Than New Hair.
A New You.

Dr. Epstein and the other Foundation Hair Restoration doctors get tremendous gratification from their work. They understand and care about how difficult losing one's own hair can be. In particular, Dr. Epstein utilizes all his aesthetic training as a facial plastic surgeon, all his experience, and all his passion for perfection to give you back the head of hair that can make you feel your best.  All of the Foundation For Hair Restoration doctors are personally trained by Dr. Epstein and are able bring their learned skills, aesthetic training and attention to detail to their patients.
