What Exactly is a Hair Transplant?

It is a procedure that involves excising small pieces of scalp that contain hair follicles.  This is called a graft.  A graft may be extremely small, containing 1-2 hairs or it may be a strip containing 30-40 hairs. Usually removed with a scalpel, the tiny piece is examined under the microscope by an experienced surgical technician, and excess skin is removed.  Fewer larger grafts will be transplanted during a session, but up to 700 of the tiniest grafts will be transplanted. About 50 large grafts may be transplanted in a session while up to 700 micro-grafts may be transplanted.  The benefit of the tiny grafts is that they heal faster and there is absolutely no scar.  These micro-grafts are a recent, successful state-of-the-art transplantation technique called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which we perform at our Los Angeles location.  The success rate of FUE is extraordinary.
