Absolutely. Typically a procedure of anywhere from a few hundred grafts to over 3,000 hair grafts can create chest hair or other body hair where there was not hair before. Of course, it is important that the surgeon create recipient sites typically in a cross patch pattern to provide the most deliberately irregular pattern of growth for the hairs. If the chest hair growth pattern is too regular, than there is a chance it will appear unnatural. It is important that the surgeon create a very irregular pattern of growth in order for the hairs to look the most natural.
If done properly, absolutely. It is important that the surgeon pays particular attention to the angle at which they are creating the recipient sites for each individual follicle to be placed because this will dictate not only the shape of the eventual eyebrows but also the density of the transplanted hairs and most importantly the direction in which the hairs eventually grow. Particularly with the "head" of the eyebrow toward the bridge of the nose, it is important that the hairs typically grow more vertically and of course very close to the skin instead of perpendicular to the skin.
DR. EPSTEIN: I am here with Rui and we just did a procedure on him yesterday of 2,645 grafts to lower his hairline and fill in but I want to show the result from his first procedure. He was essentially bald. This was all transplants. He is one day out but you can see how nice everything looks. What do you think Rui?
RUI: "It's excellent!"
DR. EPSTEIN: Rui lives in Europe and he flew in for his procedure and you can see the angulation of the hairs. What else do you have say?
RUI: "I am very happy!"
DR. EPSTEIN: That's why he came back. He is one day out. He just had his hair washed. He looks great. His donor site is healing up beautifully and he is happy.
DR. EPSTEIN: This is my patient pre-operatively. I am taking this from a photograph and here he is today. He is here for a second procedure. He had around 2,500 grafts. He has some blue markings because we are going to be doing a second procedure on him but you can see what his hairline looks like today and really quite natural. You can see a nice feathered hairline that gets more and more dense as we move into the anterior area when he puts his head down.
What we are going to be doing today is primarily working on filling in this whole mid scalp area (and if you come around here Jackie) you can see we are going to go from here all the way back to here.
Lets take a look at his donor site scar which has healed up really quite beautifully. You see just a very fine line scar with hairs growing through it. He does have that nice hair with which to work, that salt and pepper colored hair.
His first procedure was almost 2,400 grafts and with this procedure I plan on doing around 2,000-2,100 grafts which will allow me to get the coverage that he desires but he has already told me he is delighted with his hairline. He likes that it is not a straight line. Is that right?
We are back, I just wanted to show you the hairline that I designed for Richard. I like to create a very subtle widow's peak and you can see I have started around 9.5 cm above the bridge of his nose. Here are his eyebrows right here. Basically what we are going to do is come around and give him a somewhat conservative look. The area of greatest density is going to be right through here. This is the most important area but we are obviously going to go ahead and fill in all the way back to around here and give a very subtle rounding off and basically have these hairs grow down and these hairs grow like that. That is what I am going to do for him.
We now are 8 hours later and after 3,400 plus grafts you can see how much hair we were able to cover. All through there you can see nice and close up all those little grafts.
The donor area is sutured together nicely. I know he is a little sore back there because it was tight. He is laughing. You can clearly see what was done. We will come in a little closer and you will see all these grafts.
He is all set.
Tonight he is going to go ahead and use his graft site spray. Peggy can you show how the graft site spray works. This is a moisturizing spray we have all of our patients use. Did they go over that with you already?
You are going to go ahead every half hour and keep it nice and moist. The moister you keep it the faster it is going to heal up. That will help it heal up fast. You don't need to do it when you are sleeping, just when you are awake, but that is the key thing.
Repairing plastic surgery scars with hair transplants I've had 4 surgeries going into the same coronal incision which has left me bald in certain areas. Is it possible to do hair transplantation onto this overly worked incision line?
Answer:
Dear Anna - Yes, it is quite likely that the scar can be improved by a transplant procedure. You can email some photos for me to evaluate if you wish.
